Based on the results of the Consumer Price Survey of 66 cities in Indonesia in October 2009, 45 cities experienced inflation and 21 other cities experienced deflation. Mamuju experienced deflation of 0.29 percent with CPI 120.27 and ranked 13th out of cities experiencing deflation. The highest deflation in Banda Aceh was 1.30 percent with CPI 117.32 and the lowest in Madiun 0.02 percent with CPI 120.06. Meanwhile, the highest inflation occurred in Padang 1.78 percent with CPI 119.82 and the lowest in Depok 0.05 percent with CPI 115.49. The inflation rate of Mamuju City in 2009 (December 2008 - October 2009) was 0.86 percent, while the year on year inflation rate (October 2008 - October 2009) was 2.15 percent. Meanwhile for the National scale, in October 2009 inflation in Indonesia occurred at 0.19 percent, with CPI 116.68. Indonesia's inflation rate in 2009 (December 2008 - October 2009) was 2.48 percent, while the year on year inflation rate (October 2008 - October 2009) was 2.57 percent. Deflation in Mamuju in October 2009 was generally caused by a decrease in the consumer price index in the following four categories of goods and services: foodstuffs group -1.23 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group -0.01 percent; health group -0.42 percent; and the transportation, communication and financial services group -0.07 percent. While the processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group, clothing group and education, recreation and sports group respectively rose 0.28 percent, 0.05 percent and 0.08 percent. Significant decrease in the foodstuffs group was caused by the share of inflation in the meat and its products sub-group, the eggs, milk and their products sub-group and the fresh fish sub-group respectively -0.24 percent, -0.07 percent and -0.06 percent. While the decline that occurred in the health group was due to the large share of inflation in the physical care and cosmetics sub-group by -0.01 percent. Commodities contributing to inflation are: 0.05 percent garlic, apples and long beans 0.04 percent each, squid and fresh floating fish each 0.03 percent, and cell phones, dried anchovies, cigarettes kretek and fresh fish katamba each 0.02 percent. Meanwhile, commodities that contributed to inflation but were negative: were live chickens -0.14 percent, pedigree chicken -0.07 percent, pedigree eggs -0.06 percent, fresh skipjack fish and onions respectively -0 , 05 percent, inter-city transportation -0.04 percent, wet shrimp, fresh milk fish and beef -0.03 percent respectively, as well as bananas, spinach, peanuts and fresh fish baronang each -0.02 percent each .
