Abstract

 Based on the results of the Consumer Price Survey of 66 cities in Indonesia in May 2009, there were 40 cities that experienced inflation and 26 other cities experienced deflation. Mamuju experienced deflation of 0.14 percent with CPI 118.80 and ranked 20th out of cities experiencing deflation. The highest deflation in Jayapura was 1.31 percent with CPI 113.70 and the lowest in Madiun 0.03 percent with CPI 117.69. Meanwhile, the highest inflation occurred in Maumere 1.58 percent with CPI 122.98 and the lowest in Depok 0.01 percent with CPI 112.68.  The inflation rate of Mamuju City in 2009 (May 2009 to December 2008) was -0.38 percent, while the year-on-year inflation rate (May 2009 against May 2008) was 8.34 percent.  Deflation in Mamuju in May 2009 was generally caused by a significant decrease in the consumer price index in the following three categories of goods and services: foodstuffs -0.71 percent; clothing group -1.32 percent; and the transportation, communication and financial services group -0.04 percent. While the price index in the processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group, housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group and the education, recreation and sports group respectively rose 0.51 percent, 0.18 percent and 0.01 percent . Meanwhile, the health group did not experience changes in the price index.  Significant reduction in the foodstuffs group was caused by the large share of deflation in the grains, tubers and their products sub-group -0.16 percent, fresh fish sub-group -0.07 percent, eggs, milk and yields sub-group the results are -0.07 percent and the fruit sub-group -0.04 percent. While the significant decrease in the clothing group was also caused by the amount of deflation in the personal goods and other clothing sub-group by -0.10 percent.  Commodities significantly contributing to negative inflation are: rice -0.16 percent, gold jewelery -0.10 percent, chicken eggs -0.07 percent, fruit tomatoes -0.05 percent, fresh milkfish -0, 03 percent, coconut oil -0.02 percent, and fresh cobs of fish, wet shrimp, split salted fish, fresh fish, pepper / pepper, motorcycle, vegetable tomatoes, and wet anchovies -0.01 percent respectively. Meanwhile, commodities that contributed positively to inflation were: sugar 0.06 percent, red chili 0.05 percent, spinach vegetables and household fuels each 0.04 percent, and beans, ice cream, citrus fruits and green beans 0.02 percent each.
