Mamuju, 1 July 2024 – The West Sulawesi Province Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported a decline in export value of 11.71 percent in May 2024 compared to the previous month. However, imports experienced a sharp increase of 205.56 percent in the same period.
"West Sulawesi exports in May 2024 reached US$31.58 million, down from US$35.78 million in April," said Tina Wahyufitri, Head of BPS West Sulawesi Province. "This decrease was mainly caused by a decrease in exports of animal/vegetable fats and oils, which are West Sulawesi's main export commodities."
Despite the monthly decline, West Sulawesi's exports in May 2024 still recorded a significant increase of 114.25 percent compared to May 2023. China remains the main export destination, with a contribution of 36.47 percent.
On the other hand, West Sulawesi imports in May 2024 reached US$0.70 million, a jump from US$0.23 million in April 2024. This increase is an important note considering that there was no import activity in May 2023.
"Even though imports experienced a significant increase in May 2024, the cumulative value of West Sulawesi imports during January-May 2024 was still 27.31 percent lower compared to the same period the previous year," added Tina.
West Sulawesi Province BPS will continue to monitor export and import developments and provide the latest information to the public.
