Based on the results of the Consumer Price Survey of 66 cities in Indonesia in May 2013, it showed that 23 cities experienced inflation and 43 other cities experienced deflation. The highest inflation occurred in Ambon 2.25 percent with CPI 144.68 and the lowest in Bogor 0.01 percent with CPI 138.61, while the highest deflation occurred in Mataram -1.03 percent with CPI 151.24 and the lowest in Pekan Baru - 0.01 percent with CPI 137.63. With inflation of 0.45 percent and CPI 140.17, Mamuju ranks 12th highest in cities experiencing inflation.
Mamuju experienced calendar year inflation (December 2012 - May 2013) of 1.40 percent and a year on year inflation rate (May 2012 - May 2013) of 4.33 percent.
Indonesia in May 2013 experienced a deflation of 0.03 percent, with CPI 138.60. The inflation rate of the Indonesian calendar year (December 2012 - May 2013) was 2.30 percent and the inflation rate "year on year" (May 2012 - May 2013) was 5.47 percent.
Inflation in Mamuju in May 2013 was mainly caused by an increase in the consumer price index in three expenditure groups, namely: the processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group 2.24 percent, the housing group, water, electricity, gas and fuel 0.82 percent, and the transportation, communication and financial services group 0.18 percent, while the foodstuffs and clothing group experienced a decrease of -0.53 percent and -0.43 percent. Meanwhile, six health groups and education, recreation and sports groups did not experience changes in the price index.
The increase in the price index in the processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group, was caused by an increase in the index in all sub groups, namely: the processed food sub-group 1.81 percent, the non-alcoholic beverages sub-group 1.57 percent and the tobacco and beverage sub-group alcoholic 3.34 percent.
The dominant commodities contributing to inflation were: filtered clove cigarettes 0.10 percent, electricity tariffs 0.08 percent, red chillies 0.07 percent, house contracts 0.06 percent, skipjack fish and white cigarettes each 0.05 percent, grilled fish 0.04 percent, kretek cigarettes, house rent, gado-gado, carrots, noodles and soup 0.03 percent each, and granulated sugar, rice, bananas, motorbikes, flying fish and vegetable tomatoes respectively 0 , 02 percent. Meanwhile, the dominant commodities suppressing the inflation rate were: garlic -0.18 percent, onion -0.09 percent, gold jewelery -0.05 percent, cayenne pepper -0.04 percent, tomato -0.03 percent and live chickens -0.02 percent.
