Abstract

; In October 2008, Kota Mamuju experienced a deflation of 1.56 percent. Of the 66 cities studied, 53 cities experienced inflation and 13 other cities experienced deflation. The highest inflation in Palangkaraya was 1.71 percent with CPI 116.13 and the lowest in Palu 0.03 percent with CPI 115.16. While the highest deflation occurred in Ambon 1.63 percent with CPI 114.38 and the lowest in Jambi 0.03 percent with CPI of 114.87. While Mamuju ranks 3rd among cities experiencing deflation with CPI 117.74. ; The inflation rate in 2008 (October 2008 to December 2007) was 10.24 percent, while the year on year inflation rate (October 2008 to October 2007) was 14.11 percent. ; Deflation that occurred in October was mainly due to falling prices of goods and services in three of the seven categories of goods and services, namely: foodstuffs group of -5.90 percent; education, recreation and sports group by -0.56 percent; and the transportation, communication and financial services group by -0.05 percent. While three groups experienced increases, namely: the processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group 0.23 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas & fuel group 0.12 percent; clothing group 0.47 percent. While the health group did not experience price changes. ; Commodities that contributed significantly to deflation include: cakalang (-0.46%), cobs (-0.39%), milkfish (-0.14%), kale (-0.10%), cayenne pepper (- 0.09%), spinach (-0.06%), long beans, shallots, split salted fish and concrete steel (-0.05% respectively). While commodities that contributed significantly to inflation included: katamba (0.16%), granulated sugar (0.04%), chairs and cement (0.03% each), wages of domestic help and wall paint (respectively - 0.02%). The development of various commodity prices in October 2008 generally showed a decline.
