Based on the results of the Consumer Price Survey of 66 cities in Indonesia in January 2012, there were 62 cities experiencing inflation and 4 other cities experiencing deflation. The highest inflation occurred in Banjarmasin 2.92 percent with CPI 139.35 and the lowest in Banda Aceh 0.02 percent with CPI 127.15, while the highest deflation occurred in Sorong 0.38 percent with CPI 145.47 and the lowest in Manado 0.13 percent with CPI 125.94. With inflation of 0.37 percent and CPI 134.34 Mamuju ranks 52nd among cities experiencing inflation.
The highest year on year (January 2011 - January 2012) inflation rate occurred in Palangkaraya with 7.63 percent lowest in Manado-0.41 percent, while Mamuju ranked 18th among 66 CPI cities with inflation of 4.48 percent .
Indonesia in January 2012 experienced inflation of 0.76 percent, with CPI 130.90. Meanwhile, Indonesia's inflation rate "year on year" (January 2011 - January 2012) amounted to 3.65 percent.
Inflation in Mamuju in January 2012 was mainly caused by an increase in the consumer price index in six expenditure groups, namely: the 1.12 percent health group, the housing group, water, electricity, gas and fuel 0.79 percent, the processed food group, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco 0.44 percent, the transportation, communication and financial services group 0.34 percent, the education, recreation and sports group 0.15 percent and the foodstuff group 0.04 percent, while the clothing group experienced a 0.18 percent price drop.
Significant increase in the health group, mainly due to the magnitude of inflation in the health services sub-group by 0.03 percent. A significant increase also occurred in the housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel category, mainly due to inflation in the housing cost sub-group by 0.14 percent.
The dominant commodities contributing to inflation were: rice, fruit tomatoes and vegetable tomatoes each 0.10 percent, water spinach 0.07 percent, chicken eggs 0.06 percent, red chili, cement and house contracts respectively 0.05 percent, house rent and general practitioner rates are 0.03 percent each, as well as purebred chicken, bananas, carrots, filter clove cigarettes, beds, and motorcycles respectively 0.02 percent. Meanwhile, the dominant commodity provides andilinflation but negative values are: skipjack tuna -0.17 percent, milkfish -0.13 percent, flying fish -0.10 percent, tuna, garlic and long beans respectively -0.03 percent, and sand and gold jewelry each -0.02 percent.
