Abstract

 Based on the results of the Consumer Price Survey of 66 cities in Indonesia in March 2010, there were 47 cities that experienced deflation and 19 other cities experienced inflation. The highest deflation occurred in Sibolga 0.96 percent with CPI 118.81 and the lowest in Jambi 0.05 percent with CPI 119.34, while the highest inflation occurred in Singkawang 1.70 percent with CPI 122.08 and the lowest in Kendari 0.01 percent with CPI 122.60. Meanwhile, with deflation of 0.39 percent and CPI of 122.39 Mamuju ranks 17th among cities experiencing deflation.  The Mamuju City inflation rate in 2010 (December 2009 - March 2010) was 0.84 percent, while the year on year inflation rate (March 2009 - March 2010) was 3.00 percent.  Meanwhile for the National scale, in March 2010 deflation occurred in Indonesia by 0.14 percent, with CPI 118.19. Indonesia's inflation rate in 2010 (December 2009 - March 2010) was 0.99 percent, while the year on year inflation rate (March 2009 - March 2010) was 3.43 percent.  Deflation in Mamuju in March 2010 was generally caused by a decrease in the consumer price index in the following three categories of goods and services: foodstuffs -1.83 percent; processed foods, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group -0.01 percent; and the education, recreation and sports group -0.08 percent. Meanwhile the housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group, the clothing group, the health group and the transportation, communication and financial services group experienced increases in the consumer price index by 0.31 percent, 0.20 percent, 0.19 percent and 0.10 percent.  Significant decrease in the foodstuffs group was caused by the magnitude of the negative value of inflation in the fresh fish sub-group and the grains, tubers and their products sub-group respectively -0.43 percent and -0.10 percent. While the decline that occurred in the processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group was caused by the magnitude of the negative inflation share in the non-alcoholic beverages sub-group by -0.52 percent.  Commodities contributing to inflation are: fresh fish katamba 0.14 percent, spinach 0.12 percent, cayenne pepper 0.06 percent, wet shrimp and chicken eggs 0.04 percent each, and stones and bananas respectively 0.03 percent, as well as young corn, logs, house rent and vehicle maintenance / service respectively 0.02 percent. Meanwhile, commodities which contributed to inflation but were negative: were kite -0.25 percent, skipjack fresh -0.15 percent, tuna fish -0.11 percent, rice -0.10 percent, milkfish -0.09 percent, red chili -0.07 percent, vegetable tomatoes, potatoes and carrots each -0.04 percent, and kale, granulated sugar and coconuts -0.02 percent respectively
