Number of West Sulawesi Transportation Passengers Increases in December 2024

February 3, 2025 | BPS Activities

Mamuju, February 3, 2025 – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of West Sulawesi Province reported an increase in the number of air and sea transportation passengers in December 2024. The latest data shows a significant increase in both the number of passengers arriving and departing via airports and ports in the West Sulawesi region.

The Head of the West Sulawesi BPS, Tina Wahyufitri, said that this increase occurred along with the increase in ship trips anchored at several major ports.

"The increase in the number of passengers was due to the increase in the number of Sabuk Nusantara Ship trips anchored in Majene and Polewali Mandar," said Tina in a press release on Thursday (3/2/2025).

Based on BPS West Sulawesi data, the number of airplane passengers departing in December 2024 was recorded at 2,344 passengers, an increase of 1.96 percent compared to the previous month. Meanwhile, the number of incoming airplane passengers reached 2,429 people, an increase of 8.78 percent from November 2024.

The sea transportation sector also recorded a significant increase. The number of departing ship passengers was recorded at 1,139 people, an increase of 49.08 percent compared to November 2024. The number of arriving ship passengers reached 692 people or an increase of 4.22 percent compared to the previous month.

"This increase in mobility reflects an increase in economic activity and community movement in the West Sulawesi region, especially towards the end of the year," said Tina.

BPS Sulbar will continue to monitor this development in order to provide accurate data for stakeholders in planning and policy-making related to the transportation sector.
