Abstract

OVERVIEW OF WEST SULAWESI QUARTER I OF 2009  Economic growth in West Sulawesi measured by the increase in Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) based on constant prices from quarter IV / 2008 to quarter I / 2009 grew by 7.85 percent (q-to-q ), whereas when compared with the same quarter of 2008 experienced growth of 8.59 percent (y-on-y).  The magnitude of West Sulawesi's GRDP in the First Quarter of 2009 based on the current price reached Rp 2,202.23 billion while at the constant 2000 prices it reached Rp 1,054.74 billion.  The three economic sectors that experienced the highest growth in Q1 / 2009 (q-to-q) were the agricultural sector which grew by 18.58 percent, following the electricity, gas and clean water sector grew by 5.18 percent, followed by the mining sector and the excavation grew by 2.15 percent. As for the highest growth (y-on-y) namely the mining and quarrying sector grew by 44.69 percent, followed by the transportation and communication sector grew 43.03 percent, and the construction sector grew 34.41 percent.  The worst economic performance (q-to-q), occurred in the construction sector which experienced a contraction of 8.73 percent. However, when compared to the same quarter in the previous year (y-on-y) the worst economic performance was experienced by the agricultural sector which grew minus by 4.00 percent.  All components of the GRDP usage experienced negative growth in quarter I / 2009 (q-to-q) except imports which increased by 2.19 percent. The largest contracted export transactions were around minus 14.42 percent, gross fixed capital formation grew negative 13.99 percent, government consumption and household consumption respectively grew by minus 9.22 percent and minus 1.28 percent  In real terms, at quarter I 2009 there was an increase (y-on-y) in all components of GRDP according to usage. The highest growth rate occurred in the gross fixed capital formation component which reached 26.23 percent, followed by government consumption which grew around 24.04 percent. Exports and household consumption also increased respectively around 11.83 percent and 9.49 percent. Imports as a reducing component in the use of GRDP also increased by 16.74 percent.  On the usage side, most of the GRDP is used to meet household consumption by 65.07 percent. Imports and government consumption each received a portion of 21.39 percent and 20.89 percent. Meanwhile, PMTB and exports were only 15.37 percent and 13.79 percent respectively.
