February 5, 2025 | BPS Activities

Mamuju, February 5, 2025 – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of West Sulawesi Province released economic growth data for the fourth quarter of 2024, showing that West Sulawesi's economic growth cumulatively reached 4.76 percent. Although it continues to grow, this figure has slowed down compared to 2023, which was recorded at 5.23 percent.

The Head of BPS of West Sulawesi Province, Tina Wahyufitri, stated that economic growth in 2024 was driven by several main factors, including increased production of food crops and the plantation sector, which received a positive boost from better weather conditions compared to the previous year.

"The increase in production of cocoa, coconut, and patchouli is one of the main driving factors for economic growth this year," said Tina.

Leading Sectors Driving the Economy

In terms of business fields, the mining and excavation sector recorded the highest growth of 9.71 percent, followed by the electricity and gas supply sector at 9.65 percent, and health services and social activities which grew by 9.28 percent.

The agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sector remains the largest contributor to the economic structure of West Sulawesi with a contribution of 46.11 percent and growth of 4.78 percent. The increase in plantation production, including cocoa and coconut, also had a positive impact on the regional economy.

However, the processing industry sector contracted by 1.69 percent due to the decline in production of crude palm oil (CPO) and its derivatives compared to 2023. Nevertheless, the textile industry and mining industry sub-sectors continued to show positive performance.

Growth from the Expenditure Side

In terms of expenditure, household consumption remains the largest contributor with a portion of 48.34 percent of the total Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). Household consumption grew by 5.20 percent, supported by an increase in community income and controlled inflation.

"The many innovations and MSME events also contributed to increasing public consumption," added Tina.

The component with the highest growth year-on-year (y-on-y) was exports, which increased by 8.90 percent, followed by spending by non-profit institutions serving households (LNPRT) by 8.46 percent.

Positive Trends in Quarter IV-2024

On a year-on-year basis, the economy of West Sulawesi in Quarter IV-2024 grew by 6.65 percent compared to Quarter IV-2023. This growth is reflected in the increase in the value of GRDP at constant prices, from IDR 9.01 trillion in Quarter IV-2023 to IDR 9.61 trillion in Quarter IV-2024. Meanwhile, compared to Quarter III-2024, the economy of West Sulawesi grew by 3.14 percent.

Going forward, Tina Wahyufitri emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum of economic growth by strengthening leading sectors and encouraging investment.

"With synergy between the government and business actors, we are optimistic that the economic growth of West Sulawesi can continue and provide benefits to the community," he concluded.
