Mamuju, February 3, 2025 – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of West Sulawesi Province recorded month-to-month (m-to-m) deflation of 1.08 percent in January 2025. This indicates a general decrease in prices compared to the previous month. This deflation was mainly influenced by the decrease in prices of several main commodities, such as electricity tariffs, shallots, katamba fish, skipjack tuna, and cooking oil.
The Head of BPS of West Sulawesi Province, Tina Wahyufitri, in her press release on Thursday (3/2/2025), revealed that the deflation was an important indicator in understanding price dynamics in West Sulawesi.
"The decrease in prices of several main commodities contributed to the deflation that occurred in January 2025. However, there were also commodities that experienced price increases and contributed to inflation, such as mackerel, red chilies, cayenne pepper, rice, and squid," she said.
On an annual basis (year on year/y-on-y), West Sulawesi Province experienced inflation of 0.32 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 105.63. Inflation occurred in Mamuju at 1.37 percent with a CPI of 104.67, while Majene Regency experienced deflation of 0.34 percent with a CPI of 106.24.
Expenditure groups that experienced price increases and contributed to y-on-y inflation included food, beverages, and tobacco (4.38 percent), clothing and footwear (1.25 percent), and household equipment, tools, and routine maintenance (0.61 percent). Conversely, several groups experienced a decline, including housing, water, electricity, and household fuel (-10.11 percent), and health (-1.39 percent).
BPS West Sulawesi will continue to monitor price developments in various sectors and ensure the availability of accurate data for policy makers and the public.
"We hope this information can be a reference for local governments and business actors in formulating appropriate policies to maintain economic stability," concluded Tina.
